Beans, Lentils & Peas! Fasolia, Fakes & Fava!

It's August and that means we have one more month of Winter to go in South Australia! It's really cold, wet and miserable and we are always looking for a warm bowl of comfort!

Some of our warmest food memories involve eating our mum's hearty soups, such as Fasolada, Fakes & Fava.

So we were thinking about some dishes that we can share with you, using the good old pantry staple...legumes!

At any one time our pantry is stocked with navy beans, chickpeas, red lentils, brown lentils, puy lentils, split green peas, split yellow peas, borlotti beans, lima beans, black eyed beans, black beans and kidney beans.

Needless to say with our pantry supply, we'll never go hungry!

We are a house divided when it comes to our favourite legume dish though.

My favourite is Fasolada...and it's not because it's the national dish of Greece. 🤔 maybe it's in my DNA?!

Fasolada is packed with creamy beans, vegetables and the tastiest tomato sauce that is perfect for dunking in bread, especially when you crumble feta on the top.

We can't write about legumes without mentioning Fakes!

Yes, it's pronounced F$%K + YES...let the giggles begin 🤣

Admittedly Fakes are not my favourite of the legumes...sorry lentils, it's true. As a child I was really not a fan because of the vinegar added to the Fakes.

Thankfully my palate matured and I now appreciate Fakes by not adding vinegar, and instead sprinkling with feta and dunking lots of bread in the sauce. YUM!!

Yianni's favourite dish with legumes is Fava. The Greek recipe for Fava is not actually made with Broad Beans, as fava is more commonly known. In fact Greek Fava is made from split peas. It is a simple recipe but packs lots of flavour.

Traditionally served with chopped onion, a squeeze of lemon and a generous drizzle of olive oil, Fava is best enjoyed slathered on pita bread or your favourite bread.

Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing some of our favourite recipes and a couple of new recipes that we discovered while researching recipes from Greece.

Let's Eat! - A Collection of Family Recipes is creating a cookbook which will be released in 2021.

In the meantime we will be posting dishes to raise awareness, practice recipes and of course to tempt your appetite 😉
